I grew up in a small southern town where…in it’s day…furniture manufacturing was a way of life. My Dad (as well as other relatives and later my brothers and brother-in-law) worked in the furniture industry for nearly 40 years.
The Market aka The Highpoint Furniture Market has been a household term my entire life.
I’m sure this history, coupled with creative influences from the women in my life and growing up with a grandfather who made furniture for a living influenced my decision to become an interior designer.
Yet…I have had the same sofa for over 21 years. Through 3 houses…4 kids…up to 3 dogs at a time and only reupholstered it once.
To say it showed it’s age is a gross understatement.
Since all three pieces of furniture in our living room had some sort of hole, wear or tear…new furniture was long over due. Long overdue it may have been but an easy decision is was not.
For 33 years of marriage I have vetoed having a leather sofa. I didn’t want the pillows sliding around or sticky legs in the summer or all that manly leather.
I changed my mind. On one condition.
It had to be a Chesterfield.
Thinking in terms of longevity…I hoped to find a piece with timeless appeal yet made to last.
Scott’s big leather chair had to go as well. I had no intention of purchasing a chair in the same line and looked long and hard for a comfy alternative.
Near the bottom of my “new furniture wish list” was a chair that would accommodate 2 people. On many occasions that old chair held two people…though there was really only room for one. Scott and I would sit together to watch movies and then hardly be able to walk afterwards for being so stiff! 🙂
This chair is technically a chair-&-a-half but not as wide as some. The fact that I absolutely LOVE it and that it’s big enough for two far outweighs the fact that it’s wider. It’s a great lounger, throw your feet up over the side or take-a-nap-in chair.
The sofa and chair are part of the London Club line by Bernhardt.
London Club Small Leather Sofa – W 92.5″/D 41″/H 32.5″
London Club Chair1/2 – W 49.5″/D 41″/H 32.5″
The London Club is sometimes referenced as The Riviera by Bernhardt.
Antique brass nailhead trim and Molasses on exposed wood feet.
The chair was custom upholstered in Bernhardt fabric #1741-002Z (65% polyester, 20% cotton, 15% linen blend). I had them fabric protect it as well.
Furniture purchased through Mathis Brothers Furniture in OKC.
My light colored chair and I are diligently trying to keep the dogs and anyone trying to eat while watching tv (you know who you are) off the new furniture. So far so good.
While, there is still furniture to be painted (I don’t care for the stained sofa table against the dark leather sofa or the color of the large secretary) and furniture to be reupholstered (the tattered red chair)…There always something!!!…I am SO THANKFUL for new furniture!
It was worth the wait!
